Youth Empowerment & Sports Department came into existence in the year 1969-70 to encourage Youth activities in all aspects. In the year 2012-13, this department has been re-named as Youth Empowerment & Sports Department as per the recommendation of Karnataka Youth Policy.

Karnataka is one of the leading States engaged in promotion of Youth Empowerment Activities in the country. The requirements of rural and urban youth, student and non-student youth, essential for their pursuit of social, economic, sports and cultural development are being addressed by the Government through the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Voluntary Organizations and Sports Associations. The Department Youth Empowerment and Sports is making notable contribution for development of Youth Empowerment and Sports Activities in the State by extending financial assistance for creation and development of infrastructure for Youth Empowerment and Sports Activities.

Government Flying Training School:

The Govt. Flying Training School, Jakkur Aerodrome is a unique institution which began 60 years ago, by the blessings of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the than Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Also it is an institution of National repute.

Government has undertaken every effort to ensure functioning of the Institution, in all stages. The flying approval is renewed from 01.01.2016 to 31.12.2020.

This institution is giving Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Private Pilot Licence (PPL) training to the students, but also putting all efforts to create interest of the public in the flying field for the following activities like:

Microlite, helicopter, fixed wing flying and training flying

    • Hot air balloon and Para sailing
    • Remote sensing aircraft operations
    • VIP Movement.
    • Para Motor gliding

National Service Scheme:

The National Service Scheme, Karnataka, comes under the control of Additional Chief Secretary / Principal Secretary to Government of Youth Empowerment & Sports Department, M.S. Building, Bangalore. The State NSS Officer and Ex-Officio Joint Secretary to Government is the sole in charge of the National Service Scheme. In each University and Directorate there will be a Programme Co-ordinator who will look after the NSS Activities will take part in successful implementation of the programmes. 36 Programme Co-ordinaters and 3000 Programme Officers are involved in implementing the NSS activities of 32 universities and 4 universities in the State. In the scheme the strength of volunteers is 2,78,200 are in Regular and 1,39,100 are for Special Camp Activities covering 32 Universities and 04 Directorates are involved in the state.
